7 Halloween AI image prompts for tarot card illustrations from candy wizards to a skeleton king

Halloween tarot cards with a witch and raven

Halloween AI image prompts tend to land in the same places every October: a carved pumpkin on a porch, cobwebs, a haunted house under a full moon. They set the mood, but the results often look like something you have already seen.

So we tried putting Halloween scenes inside tarot cards. An ornate border and a symmetrical layout turn a witch or a pumpkin into a finished illustration, and once you have a few of them, they start to read as a deck.

The seven cards below were made in Midjourney V8.2 with the same style reference, so they work as one set. They start with wizards handing out candy and end with a skeleton king between two candles. Find a card you like, copy its prompt, and use the tip to change the scene.

Children Trick or Treating at a Wizard Tower

Children Trick or Treating at a Wizard Tower

Model: Midjourney V8.2

A tarot card illustration of three small children in cute costumes, a ghost, a bat and a little witch, standing at the door of a tall wizard's tower and holding out candy buckets, a grand old archmage with a long white beard leaning down to drop candy into them, glowing jack-o'-lanterns on the steps, symmetrical composition, ornate decorative border frame, no text, no lettering --ar 2:3 --sref 485901983 --version 8.2

Tip: To change the costumes without touching the layout, swap "a ghost, a bat and a little witch" for "a mummy, a black cat and a small vampire". The tower, the wizard, and the steps stay where they are.

Children in Costumes with a Pumpkin Carriage

Children in Costumes with a Pumpkin Carriage

Model: Midjourney V8.2

A tarot card illustration of two children in knight and witch costumes riding a carved pumpkin carriage pulled by a small friendly dragon, a grand medieval castle gate ahead where an old wizard waves from the balcony holding a bowl of candy, symmetrical composition, ornate decorative border frame, no text, no lettering --ar 2:3 --sref 485901983 --version 8.2

Tip: A dragon pulling the carriage leans more fairy tale than Halloween. Replace "a small friendly dragon" with "two black cats in tiny harnesses" to bring the scene back toward October.

Wizard Conjuring Sweets for Children

Wizard Conjuring Sweets for Children

Model: Midjourney V8.2

A tarot card illustration of a great wizard raising his staff as a swirl of glowing stars turns into falling wrapped candies and lollipops, a group of costumed children below catching them in pointed hats and open baskets, night sky with a crescent moon, symmetrical composition, ornate decorative border frame, no text, no lettering --ar 3:4 --sref 485901983 --version 8.2

Tip: For a more seasonal sky, change "night sky with a crescent moon" to "night sky with a huge orange harvest moon". A large moon behind the wizard should also give his raised staff a clearer silhouette.

Wizard Stirring a Cauldron of Sweets

Wizard Stirring a Cauldron of Sweets

Model: Midjourney V8.2

A tarot card illustration of an elderly archmage in a starry robe stirring a huge bubbling cauldron overflowing with colorful wrapped candies, a small child in a pumpkin costume peeking over the rim with wide eyes, floating candles and sparkles above, symmetrical composition, ornate decorative border frame, no text, no lettering --ar 4:5 --sref 485901983 --version 8.2

Tip: If you need a version without people, for a card back or a sticker sheet, shift "a small child in a pumpkin costume" to "a black cat wearing a tiny witch hat". Something still peeks over the rim, so the composition holds.

Witch Holding A Glowing Jack-O-Lantern

Witch Holding A Glowing Jack-O-Lantern

Model: Midjourney V8.2

A tarot card illustration of a smiling witch in a tall pointed hat holding a glowing jack-o'-lantern lantern, standing under a large full moon with bare twisted trees behind her, symmetrical composition, ornate decorative border frame, no text, no lettering --ar 2:3 --sref 485901983 --version 8.2

Tip: This is where the deck starts to turn darker. To push it further, try "stern old witch" in place of "smiling witch". A change in expression is enough to bridge the playful cards before it and the skeleton king at the end.

Alchemist with Glowing Orb and Potions

Alchemist with Glowing Orb and Potions

Model: Midjourney V8.2

A tarot card illustration of an old alchemist in a hooded robe holding a glowing glass orb above a wooden table with potion bottles and an open book, warm candlelight, mystical atmosphere, symmetrical composition, ornate decorative border frame, no text, no lettering --ar 3:4 --sref 485901983 --version 8.2

Tip: This card has no Halloween motif, so it works year-round. When you want a seasonal version, extend "potion bottles and an open book" to "potion bottles, an open book and a small carved pumpkin".

Skeleton King Seated on a Stone Throne

Skeleton King Seated on a Stone Throne

Model: Midjourney V8.2

A tarot card illustration of a skeleton king seated on a stone throne, wearing a golden crown and a long dark red robe, holding a scepter, with two lit candles on either side, symmetrical composition, ornate decorative border frame, no text, no lettering --ar 2:3 --sref 485901983 --version 8.2

Tip: The last card in the deck has no Halloween props of its own. Trade "two lit candles on either side" for "two carved jack-o'-lanterns on either side" to keep the throne and crown and change only what flanks them.

Turning these Halloween AI image prompts into your own deck

Line the seven prompts up and you will see that only the opening scene changes. Everything after it stays the same, so a new card only needs a new scene. There are three places worth adjusting.

  • Keep the closing phrases. "symmetrical composition, ornate decorative border frame" builds the card itself. Keep "no text, no lettering" as well. Real tarot cards carry a name at the bottom, and without that phrase the model often fills the space with unreadable letters.

  • Match the aspect ratio to where the card will live. This set mixes --ar 2:3, 3:4, and 4:5. A standard tarot card is about 2.75 × 4.75 inches, which is taller than 2:3. If you plan to print, start at --ar 4:7. For an Instagram feed, 4:5 gets cropped the least.

  • Let sref hold the style. The seven cards share their linework and palette because they share --sref 485901983. Swap the code to build a deck in a different style, or lower --sw when you want the prompt text to count for more than the style reference.
